Preventive Dental Care Will Save Your Family Money

Preventative DentistryThe importance of preventive dental care cannot be overstated. You may already know that preventive dental care saves money, and keeps minor problems from turning into major issues. However, did you know that it could save you a trip to the emergency room? Dr. Campbell, a Prosper dentist, explains how you can save money and avoid visiting the ER.

According to a report by the Pew Center, dental problems are one of the primary reasons people visit an emergency room. Unfortunately, the report states, the average cost of a hospital ER visit for dental problems is nearly 10 times more expensive than the cost of preventive dental care. Based on data collected in 2006, emergency room  visits due to dental problems cost almost $110 million in 2006, and since that year, the costs have continued to rise. Worse still, many of these ER visits do not solve the problem, leaving patients to seek follow-up treatment, or come back again, in crisis. For both adults and children, dental care should be scheduled regularly, to prevent these crises from occurring.

Many people do not have access to dental care. In some areas, there is a shortage of dentists, and many dentists do not accept patients who do not have dental insurance. Fortunately, in Prosper, dentist visits are not beyond your reach, because 380 Family Dentistry provides preventive dental care, and works with those who have financial challenges. You may not be able to help Americans underserved by dental care, but here are a few ways you can help your family:

  • See your dentist regularly. The ADA recommends two dental checkups each year, to allow your dentist the opportunity to catch disease and cavities early. Regular preventive dental care can combat not only cavities, but also tooth breakage and gum disease.
  • Take your children to the dentist early. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry states that a child’s first dentist visit should occur before his or her first birthday. It is important to take children to the dentist regularly, not only to monitor their dental health, but also to help them feel safe and secure in the dentist’s chair.
  • Understand that preventive dental care goes beyond cleanings. The Number One most cost-effective solution for preventive dental care is investing in dental sealants. Fluoride helps prevent cavities, and new technology such as laser diagnostics can detect issues before they become expensive and painful problems.

Frisco Teeth Whitening – New Technology

Dentist Teeth Whitening

Before

For those living in Frisco, teeth whitening just got a bit more efficient. If your appearance is a top priority, you may be frustrated with traditional teeth whitening, which never seems to get your smile quite white enough. Now, a Frisco dentist has revolutionized the process, making it much more effective, in order to give you the results you want.

Dentist Teeth Whitening

During

Tooth stains fall into two categories. Extrinsic stains are on the surface of the tooth and can be removed with whitening toothpastes and gum. Intrinsic stains are on the inside of the tooth, and show through the enamel. These internal stains can appear as dark discolorations, but hydrogen peroxide has proven effective in removing them. This is because hydrogen peroxide breaks down into water and radical hydroxyl ions when it is applied to the tooth. The ions travel through the dentinal tubules and into the tooth, where they break up stains by attaching themselves to the stain particles. Once the stains are removed, the teeth are whitened and look brighter.

Dentist Teeth Whitening

After

The new whitening agent is 50% hydrogen peroxide. Mixed at the dentist office, it is much more potent than the teeth whitening you may be accustomed to using. To put it in perspective, consider this: over-the-counter teeth whitening products are 10 percent hydrogen peroxide, and Crest Whitestrips contain 6 percent to 14 percent.  Custom tray gel is 25 percent to 30 percent, and in-office bleaching is between 25 percent and 40 percent. Dentist teeth whitening services usually fall into this range, because the dentists use pre-mixed solutions. These solutions cannot achieve 50 percent concentration because of the instability of hydrogen peroxide, which breaks down rapidly. The new process is mixed chairside, allowing the dentist to use 50 percent hydrogen peroxide. This is by far more preferable, because a stronger concentration of peroxide achieves superior results.

Dental X-Rays with Risk of Brain Tumors?

There has been recent press about a study that came out associating dental x-rays to an increased risk of developing cancer.  Unfortunately, most media has failed to present all of the facts, mostly including the details of the study.  The official American Dental Association’s response can be found here.

First, the study was done on people in their 50s linking childhood dental experiences, which means the x-rays that were taken were done over 40 years ago.  Secondly, the study does not have charts from these patients; it relies almost solely on the patient’s memory.  I do not know about you, but my memory gets a little fuzzy about details from 20 years ago, much less 40.

A multitude of advances in x-rays, film, and digital have completely changed how x-rays are done today.  In the past, x-rays were set to the number of seconds of exposure, today they are set in tenths of a second.  X-ray units now are much more targeted, exposing a much smaller area than in the past.  And now with digital x-rays, the exposure is greatly diminished from even the best film x-ray.

With all the advancements in x-ray technology, the amount of radiation used 40 years ago is about 10 times greater than film x-rays done today.  Digital x-rays need 90% less radiation than the best film.  Put that together and digital x-rays use about 1% of the radiation that was used 40 years ago.

Physicists are constantly looking into radiation exposure.  Steve D. Rima, CHP says the average person gets 360 mrems of radiation a year from background sources, including sunlight, natural gas, microwaves, flying in a plane, etc.  That does not include the variety of radiation sources we exposure ourselves to each day from computers, cell phones, and other electronic devices.  Dental x-rays by comparison only exposure you to 2-3 mrems, 90% less with digital.

If there is ever a concern, please talk to your dentist about x-rays and any questions.  Personally, I do not plan on avoiding normal sunlight, flying in a plane, or my cell phone any more than I would avoid my office or my own dental care.

Frisco Pediatric Dentist Gives Oral Health Tips For Kids

pediatric dentist friscoAccording to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, 40% - 50% or more of children will be affected by tooth decay before age 5.  Those do not sound like great odds, do they?  So as a parent, you need to know what the best pediatric dentists suggest be done to put your child on the track to avoid being one of the 2 million children who have cavities by the time they reach second grade.

As a Frisco pediatric dentist, we want to share several tips.  When considering these tips, remember that healthy primary teeth—sometimes called “baby teeth”—are as important as the permanent adult teeth.  It is also important to begin a healthy dental hygiene regimen early in a child’s life so it becomes a part of their daily routine.

When to start?  This is a question frequently asked of dentists.  According to the American Dental Association, parents should begin cleaning the baby’s mouth with a gauze pad during the first few days after birth, even before teeth appear.  At a minimum, wiping the infant’s gums after feedings will remove plaque that could affect the teeth once they start to emerge.  The best pediatric dentists suggest using disposable textured dental wipes specially designed for this purpose, such as Tooth Tissues™.  Tooth tissues have xylitol, which reduces cavities and is sweet tasting, too.

Brushing needs to start as soon as the first primary tooth appears. It is at that time when tooth decay can start.  The use of tooth tissues remains a helpful part of the overall dental regime; perhaps as a quick cleanup between brushings.

Toddlers and younger children do not have the ability to brush their own teeth so they will need help.  Some dentists recommend two toothbrushes; one that the child can (and will) chew on and another that a parent can use to use to properly clean the teeth and gums.  Getting kids to properly brush is a difficult task.  Everyone knows that dentists instruct their patients to brush at least twice a day and use floss. Everyone also knows that those instructions are easily “forgotten.”

The best pediatric dentists believe they have a better solution that encourages proper brushing for a lifetime.  Kids should start using Sonicare For Kids.  Unlike many of the “spin” toothbrushes, which really are not as effective as you might think, the Sonicare is designed to help kids develop and maintain healthy brushing habits.

Mouth washing and rinsing are useful elements in the dental hygiene program.  There are anti-cavity rinses that taste good while strengthening teeth better than by brushing alone.  Normally the best pediatric dentists recommend that children over the age of six use Listerine for Kids.  It can also helps clear away what might have been missed during brushing.

In some cases the dentist might also recommend an Anti-Cavity Rinse.  These are typically used to provide extra fluoride protection.

Checkups are important, too.  So start by making sure the first trip to your pediatric dentist is no later than at one year of age and, as the best pediatric dentists recommend, even earlier.

McKinney Teeth Whitening: Your Questions Answered

McKinney Teeth WhiteningIf you are looking for dental care in McKinney, teeth whitening may be something you are considering. First impressions are extremely important, and many people whiten their teeth in order to have a smile that impresses people at first sight. 380 Family Dentistry offers both in office and take home tooth whitening options, so you can be sure to find one that meets your needs.

  • Take Home Whitening Gels:These let you whiten at home, when it is convenient for you. Safe, effective, and customized, they are only available through a dentist.
    • They are safe because they are supervised by a dentist, from the initial consultation all the way through completion. The gel will not migrate to your gums, and most formulas include fluoride, which improves the health of your mouth by strengthening enamel, decreasing sensitivity, and bolstering your cavity protection.
    • Not only are they safe, they are effective! Featuring prescription-strength gels that provide results after just one night, take home gels come in different strengths, and you will be able to see a definite change by the end of the first week.
    • Finally, these treatments are customized. In an initial consultation, your dentist will create a customized bleaching tray especially for your mouth. The gel comes in different formulas and flavors, to make your experience both effective and enjoyable.
    • In-office Treatments: These chemically activated whitening treatments produce extremely rapid results. Within an hour of being treated, you will see a noticeable whiteness. In-office whitening has come a long way, and now features innovative and unique techniques that provide consistent results and little to no sensitivity.

The best thing about dentist-supervised whitening is that you can be assured that it will not damage your teeth. In addition, patients have little to no sensitivity, and for those who develop sensitivity, it only lasts for a couple days.  New and improved whitening options mean that dentists are able to whiten almost anyone’s teeth, even those for whom whitening was not possible a few years ago.

McKinney Pediatric Dentist Explains Preventative Dentistry for Kids

McKinney, Texas is not much different than anyplace else when it comes to the need for preventative dentistry for children.  Consider this: according to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, “Students miss more than 51 million school hours per year because of dental problems or related conditions.”  It is doubtful any parent wants their child to miss school due to some dental problem that was easily preventable.  A McKinney pediatric dentist wants to everything possible to help prevent dental problems before a child misses any activities.

pediatric dentist mckinneyTreatment begins with infancy.  Pediatric dentists agree that prevention begins at home while the child is an infant.  The best pediatric dentists recommend wiping an infant’s gums after feeding, at least with a piece of gauze. This helps prevent initial plague build-up.  Parents should make sure their children are finished with their feeding and their mouth rinsed or cleaned before napping or sleeping.

Cavities can begin to form as soon as primary teeth begin to appear, so that is when brushing needs to start.  At first, parents will have to help their children brush to ensure all the surfaces are cleaned.  There are many approaches to handling the “I don’t wanna brush” argument.  Nonetheless, sooner or later children need to learn how to brush their own teeth and make it a healthy habit.  Seeing your pediatric dentist in McKinney will be a great source of advice in this regard.

First Visits.  The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends children visit pediatrics dentists by their first birthday or within 6 months of the first tooth appearing.

Frequently the question of flossing will come up.  If teeth are touching each other, even “baby” teeth, then flossing should be introduced to the daily routine.   As children grow into teenagers, the lack of adequate flossing becomes the second most significant issue leading to dental problems.  Starting the flossing regimen early is an excellent idea.

As molars come in, it’s time to ask the McKinney pediatric dentist to apply sealant.  It’s at this time that molars are most vulnerable.  Fluoride is important, too.  During the formation of teeth, fluoride helps strengthen them against acid and bacteria that cause decay.  Actually, the use of fluoride ought to continue throughout the years.

As infants mature into children and children become teenagers and young adults, the single biggest cause of cavities is sodas and sport drinks.  Not only do they tend to have lots of sugars but are often consumed when the mouth is dry and most vulnerable.

The teen years are also when orthodontia is common.  Kids with braces need to see their dentist every three months (rather than six months as otherwise recommended) and be checked for halos that can form around the brackets attaching the braces to the teeth.

Preventative dental hygiene is a process that begins with infants and continues essentially for a lifetime.  When started properly most potential problems can be prevented or at least dealt with promptly.

Your McKinney pediatric dentist, Dr.Campbell can help.  If you have questions or if you would like to schedule an appointment, please call 972-347-4867.

What is Preventive Dental Care and Why is it Important?

It has been in the news recently, so you may be wondering, “What is preventive dental care?” Most people use dental services in a reactive way, to fight decay and disease that has already occurred. Dentists, however, encourage their patients to be more proactive, to prevent trouble before it starts. Now, a Prosper dentist offers groundbreaking preventive dental care to help patients stay healthy and avoid dental problems.

what is preventative denal careWhen you think of preventing dental issues, the service that most likely comes to mind immediately is teeth cleaning. It is true; this is the most time honored preventive dental service. However, in the past decade, dentistry has made great strides in preventive care. The ADA recommends two dental checkups each year because, with regular checkups, dentists can catch disease and cavities early. By doing so, they can fix them before they become painful and expensive.  With treatments like digital x-rays and laser diagnostics, cavities can often be caught in time to be reversed through prescription toothpaste use or be fixed without shots. Another problem that can be avoided through early diagnosis is broken teeth. If a dentist can detect weak spots and cracks on the teeth, breaks can be prevented before they cause worse problems, such as root canals or losing teeth.   Finally, gum disease is becoming one of the nation’s most prevalent problems, causing patients to lose otherwise healthy teeth.   Gum disease can start in as little as a year or two of not seeing a dentist.

Preventive dentistry should become a part of your family health care plan, because it also saves money. A recent report from the Florida Public Health Institute found that more than 115,000 emergency room visits in 2010 were for conditions that could have been avoided with preventive dental care. This caused a jump in costs of over $20 million from the cost in 2008, and researchers speculate that this dramatic increase is a result of the lack of dental services available to Medicaid recipients and people without insurance. As a result, FPHI and Oral Health Florida have come up with a plan to expand preventive dental services.

Prevention is key; the average ER bill is five times greater than an average dental bill.

Of course, this is not just a problem in Florida. All across the country, people are finding that preventive dental care can save them money, pain, and trouble. What is preventive dental care? It is a way for you to take charge of your health in a meaningful way. If you are in the Prosper area, you can be sure to your dental needs are handled by discovering 380 Family Dentistry. Visit the website to learn more, or call the office to set up an appointment or schedule a tour, 972-347-4867.
